The Loddon
Lily (also known as the Summer
Snowflake) is Withymead’s
signature flower. This dainty
flower which takes its name from
the River Loddon, a tributary of
the River Thames below Shiplake
near Reading, thrives in the
swampy soil beneath willows and
in the water meadows. If flowers
in April and May and can reach a
height of 60cm.
Withymead is open to the public
on Sundays and Bank Holiday
Mondays throughout April and May
for people to enjoy the Loddon
Lily at their best.
Other flowers include Star of
Bethlehem, cuckoo plant, ragged
robin, yellow iris, red and
white campian, to name just a
few.
In the reedbeds Phragmites or
the common reed and bulrush
flourish.
At one time the gardens were
quite formal and the remnants of
this can still be seen. Along
the river banks willow branches
brush the water and in the woods
oak, sycamore and horse chestnut
reach for the sky.
